Why Bamboo you ask?

Well, there’s one simple answer – and it’s an answer we should ALL be acting upon.

Our world is full of plastic – 300 million tonnes of it in fact – and 50% of it is binned after its first use. A big part of this is plastic toothbrushes and every year we produce around 4 billion – yes 4 billion – of them that according to dental specialists should be thrown away every 3 months.

Plastics can take over 400 years to degrade

You now see the problem. And those toothbrushes don’t just disappear – in fact they hang around in landfill and our oceans for another 400 plus years before they start to degrade and ‘feed’ our marine life.

Many moons ago before we had toothpaste and toothbrushes, we didn’t have the plastic problem. Teeth were cleaned by chalk, twigs and rags amongst other things.

You now have options in the 21st century – some are killing the planet, whilst others give you a better alternative.

Bamboo as an alternative to plastic

Thankfully, the Bamboo toothbrush is becoming a popular alternative to the plastic ones.

A natural toothbrush made from Bamboo is more durable and healthier than a plastic one, stronger and harder than a wooden one, does not splinter, and is biodegradable and compostable.

Bamboo is an extremely fast-growing, abundant and sustainable material. In fact, it grows at a rate of just under a metre per day (or about 1 inch every 40 minutes – that’s fast).

And Bamboo is also naturally antibacterial, making it an excellent choice for your daily oral care and hygiene. The continued effects of Bamboo kun which has antibacterial properties when Bamboo is harvested is unconfirmed though, but it is welcoming to know that Bamboo naturally has defenses against bacteria in the wild.

There’s an argument as to whether the bristles of eco-friendly toothbrushes are biodegradable with different types of nylon being thrown about so it’s not possible to say they are 100% natural. But the bristles we use are BPA-free Nylon, a non-toxic synthetic polymer. So all in all, the toothbrush is giving you a 95% saving on plastic!
